Chapter Sixteen

To The Point Of Bursting

“What the fuck are you two doing?”

“Have you ever heard of knocking?” I shot back, though my voice was somewhat muffled by my armpit.

Luckily my back was to him so he couldn’t see the girls. Still, I don’t think he was exactly confused about what was going on. Pretty sure his question was rhetorical since it was fairly clear that I was straddling Adam and we were attempting – however unsuccessfully – to remove my shirt.

You know, with this latest interruption, I was really starting to think Aphrodite didn’t have my back at all.

“Give us two seconds before you yell at us,” Adam said, finally managing to free my head. He pulled the shirt down so everything was covered once more. I climbed off him awkwardly, put my glasses on so I could see exactly how angry Tim was, and sat beside Adam with my legs and arms crossed. Defensive posture? Who, me?

“May I resume yelling?” Tim asked.

“There’s really no need to yell,” I said. “Let’s not be inconsiderate of the neighbours.”

Tim narrowed his eyes in a way that made it clear he didn’t give a fuck about the neighbours.

“Tim –” Adam began, but Tim didn’t let him get any further.

“What the hell are you thinking? This is a bad idea. Beyond bad. Terrible.”

“I think it’s a good idea,” I said. “Obviously. Because I’m doing it.”

“You do things that are terrible ideas all the time. Excuse me if I don’t entirely trust your judgment.”

“Excuse me if I think your opinion of who I should fuck is irrelevant.”

Adam turned to me, eyes widening slightly in appreciation. “Nice.”

“Thank you.” I turned back to Tim. “You’re our friend. Just be happy for us.”

“You are my friends, which is exactly why I can’t be happy about you diving headlong into a disaster.”

I frowned, momentarily confused at what Tim meant about Adam diving headlong into me. Then I realised he meant our relationship was a disaster. I probably should have been upset by that, but I thought it was kind of cool that Adam and I now shared a disaster in Tim’s eyes. Usually my disasters were all of my own making.

“You don’t know anything about what we’re like together,” said Adam. “You can’t just assume it would be a disaster.”

“Can’t I? Because it seems like a pretty safe assumption to me.”

“We’re secretly much nicer than the rest of the world realises,” I said. “At least to each other. Most of the time.” I wrinkled my nose and turned to Adam. “Sorry. I feel like maybe I’m not helping.”

He put his arm around my shoulder. “You were doing great until you added the qualifiers.”

“I assume this is why you were so insistent that we all needed an early night,” said Tim. “You had plans for once the rest of us were asleep.”

“We weren’t actually going to, you know, do anything,” I said. “We were just kissing.”

“While taking your clothes off.”

“None of my clothes actually came off.”

“Because you got tangled in your shirt, not because you weren’t trying.
